Baltimore’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake instructed police to give rioting mobs “space” to carry out their destruction.
“I made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech,” she said to the press.
“It’s a very delicate balancing act, because while we try to make sure that they were protected from the cars and other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well,” the mayor said.
“And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to de-escalate.”
The riots broke out during protests over the death of Freddie Grey. While the right to protest is important for law enforcement to respect and protect, when demonstrations devolve into violence and destruction, the police have a responsibility to protect the innocent and their property.
Many are enraged at what they feel is a policy which emboldens rioters while disregarding property owners.
What do you think about the fact that the mayor of Baltimore instructed police to stand down so rioting thugs could destroy the city under the guise of the First Amendment?
