Photos of Drugs Under The Microscope Are Wildly Colored And Starkly Beautiful

When you drink your morning coffee or afternoon soda, you don't think twice.

But a new photo series by Dutch lab-worker-turned-photographer Maurice Mikkers will have you seeing caffeine--along with other birth-control pills, LSD, and other legal and illicit drugs --in a whole new light.

The photos are part of a series called Micrograph Stories.

As Medium reported, Mikkers' experience in the lab informed his experimentation. He perfected a method of crushing the drugs and dissolving them in water and then heating each solution to evaporate away the water.

Left behind are crystalline versions of each substance that are starkly beautiful when magnified--just scroll down for a look.
